The first birth I witnessed was that of my gorgeous nephew...almost 20 years ago. What struck me was what strength a woman has within in her and is able to tap in to, especially when supported to do so. My sister's midwife was kind, skilled and ultimately her biggest cheerleader. Empowering her to birth her baby. I was hooked - I wanted to be that for women too!
I'm Kath Metz a registered New Zealand midwife with now more than 17 years clinical experience working in the community and hospitals across NZ & just recently, Australia.
My roles have been varied including working as an LMC midwife & diabetes midwife educator. I have studied adult education and for the last 10 years held dual roles as a Midwife and Clinical Midwife Educator. This has facilitated my desire to inform, inspire & motivate midwives to promote quality evidenced based care to the women and babies we care for. But all the while empowering women to be the best that they can be.
What I have noticed over the years is that the landscape for women giving birth has changed. Our modern day lifestyle with its conveniences and fast "everything", chronic health conditions such as diabetes & obesity and mental health conditions such as stress & anxiety are impacting women's health and her ability to conceive, and have a "normal" pregnancy and birth. We are also learning more and more around how her health can impact the future health of her children.
This is one of the reasons it is now my mission, in my new role as a Women’s Health Coach to help build a new future for my clients whose wish it is to have a baby. By supporting & educating women to understand that their health and happiness is really important not only for themselves but to the future of their children.
And the other reason for my new role? For me. I turned to study nutrition and health coaching to reclaim my own health and happiness. Shift work and under resourcing - stress, burnout and anxiety are real for me too. I learnt and continue to learn how to integrate strategies and tools to improve my own health. Its not always easy, it is definitely worth it.
My desire now is to empower women to be their best selves. To support clients to improve their health to help improve their ability to conceive, nourish their growing baby and flourish in their new role as a mother.
I very much look forward to working with you.
I love continuing to expand and share my knowledge especially in the area of health and I was very inspired by my recent attendance at the Australasia Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) conference.
I also love walking and mountain biking in the Whakawerawera forest in my home town of Rotorua, New Zealand, with my husband and friends. I have begun practicing yoga which is helpful for my biking and my mental health also.
And recently we built a new home and I'm very much enjoying developing the land with fruit trees, vege garden and my 6 chickens. I just LOVE coming in from the garden with fresh veges and eggs and creating something yummy and healthy for us.
